BJA’s Chuck Nicholas inducted into NSDA Hall of Fame
Chuck Nicholas with his award.
The highest honor for any high school speech and debate coach is election to the National Speech & Debate Association Hall of Fame. Each year, nominations are sought from member coaches.
Over the last 40 years, Chuck Nicholas has become the model servant leader and educator to his students, to his school, to other educators, and to the NSDA. A six-diamond coach, the first in South Carolina, Chuck has taught and coached thousands of students with over 100 qualifying to the NSDA National Tournament, numerous national finalists, and two national champions. The recipient of the Don Crabtree Distinguished Service Award — 10th Honors, he has worked for decades in the National Tournament tab room, served on the South Carolina District Committee, and volunteered in tab rooms throughout North and South Carolina.
He was named the South Carolina Educator of the Year by the NSDA and also the 2022 Coach of the Year for Mock Trial in South Carolina. In Mock Trial, Chuck has coached numerous regional and state champions. While he and his students have earned countless honors, it is Chuck as a person that distinguishes him.
An individual beyond reproach, he values the honor and integrity of the NSDA Honor Society and expects nothing less from his students and other colleagues. As half of Team Nicholas, he always gives credit to his wife, Gail, for any team success. Chuck helps with judge training, he educates new coaches not only about the activity but also the “process” of coaching, and he even serves as the team’s bus driver. Chuck will do anything and everything to provide speech and debate opportunities to all who are willing to learn.
